Paper Jewelry
Part 2 of 3
Upcycled. Recycled. Repurposed. Eco. Whatever you choose to call it, environmentally friendly jewelry is not only cool but helps reduce the waste going to landfills especially paper. We were supposed to use less paper in the digital age but the amount we consume has instead quadrupled! So I'd like to pay homage to these amazing paper jewelry artisans who not only do their part in recycling but manage to put the wow back into yesterday's news.

Sandra Di Giacinto
An outstanding Italian contemporary designer is Sandra Giacinto who like many paper jewelry artisans adores Japanese art. However she says the pleating technique she uses is an inspiration from ancient Greece. She likes to recycle cardboard, special binding papers and coated metallic papers. Her work is sold all over the world including in prestigious museum shops and no wonder. Her buttons above are simply gorgeous!

Playing with Books: The Art of Upcycling, Deconstructing, and Reimagining the BookRag and Bone Bindery
The lovely recycled paper jewelry you see was created by alamodestuff using punch-outs from an old calendar featuring shoes which were then strung on silver wire. She was inspired by a design of Jason Thompson, the founder and president of Rag & Bone Bindery who happens to be her friend.  Thompson specializes in making unique handbound books and other fine bindings. He clearly loves books as he has a new book coming out in April 2010 : Playing with Books: The Art of Upcycling, Deconstructing, and Reimagining the Book This book will have step by step projects to show you how to make beautiful objects and accessories from recycled books.

FrucciDesign on Etsy
New York based, Francesca Vitali is the paper and metal work virtuoso who creates outstanding contemporary eco designs I really like.  These are her shelly bangles.

She uses magazine pages and folds them, sometimes in the origami style as shown by these Girasole eco-pendants

Not just any magazines but Vouge! Lightweight too as shown by her Pink Solido bracelet :

Librarianship on Etsy
Houston based Nicci is the artisan behind Librarianship's shop which sells handmade paper jewelry. Her products appeal to bibliophiles. She works in a library so those old borrowing cards have been cleverly collected, hand cut and strung into a necklace.

Yesterday's Newspaper is Today's Jewelry
Holly Anne Mitchell is a Fine Arts graduate from the University of Michigan who has found her niche. Her newspaper jewelry is very clever as she includes different parts of newspapers - puzzle pages and comics. Her loser lottery tickets are also inspired!!
