Steampunk Inspirations
Part 1 of 2

Steampunk is an increasing popular design trend - not just jewelry, but the whole look - Victorian style clothing with accessories worthy of a Jules Verne or HG Wells movie. That retro technology style is highly distinctive. One master artisan has to be Daniel Proulx, the steampunk designer behind Catherinette Rings on Etsy. When I first stumbled on his rings, my jaw dropped. These are truly art pieces. Shown on the right is his ring with a Swarovski Volcano focal.

Catherinette Rings is a husband and wife team based in Montreal, Canada.  Catherine is a graphic designer who is responsible for making the necklaces and the flower and adjustable ring designs - pretty feminine pieces for female steampunkers. Daniel  is the full time steampunk designer who made all the jewelry shown here. He works with brass and copper and makes steampunk sculptures too. Go check out their Etsy store for much, much more stunning jewelry. They also write a blog. Daniel is an accomplished photographer so I recommend you visit his outstanding Flickr gallery.

His story is just inspiring. He said, "In April of 2008 I started to make rings just for fun ... I spent several hours every day perfecting and developing my own technique to create an original design. I quickly started to make very retro-futurist model of rings. At that time I decided to embark on this adventure, quit my job and try to live on my jewelry full-time. One day a friend told me what I was doing was steampunk. I researched the subject and fell in love with this culture. I always liked steampunk but I didn't know there was a name for it." It goes to show how being passionate about what you do is what really counts.
