It was only a matter of time for someone to come up with a jewelry based fund raiser for the terrible Gulf of Mexico oil spill.  For New Orleans based designer Mignon Faget, the disaster really hits home.  She says, “I was born here and I’ve lived here all of my life. What is so beautiful about Louisiana comes out through my work." So she decided to do something about the calamity that's already killed much wildlife and threatens the livelihood of many for years to come.

A nature lover, Faget 's new collection "In Mourning" makes use of many of the animal designs from her earlier collections featuring redfish, speckled trout, oysters and pelicans. These silver or gold pieces have been teamed with black ribbons and cord to symbolize loss.

She said, "It is a heartbreaking statement to make with jewelry originally designed to celebrate the abundant gifts of our coast, but the reality is that we need to make people aware of this disaster and the long-term effects on this region."

Her collection can be bought locally around the Louisana area or through her website. The proceeds will go to the Coalition to Restore Coastal Louisiana,  a nonprofit organization dedicated to restoring and protecting the Louisiana coast.

It's hard for those of us who live far away to truly understand the scope of this disaster. If It Was My Home is a way to help us visualize the enormous size of the oil spill. This website takes daily updates from NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) and combines it with Google Maps to virtually move the Deepwater Horizon rig to anywhere in the world. Makes one gag.
