There are lots of metal findings out there. Some people prefer shiny metals. Others like the look of vintage brass or copper where the metal is deliberately patinaed to give it the appearance of age. The mixed media route is yet another option.

Shown here is a very easy way to alter metal. Jenn Mason, the editor of ClothPaperScissors.com demonstrates the use of sanding and permanent alcohol based Adirondack paints in this video tutorial. Notice how she starts with very dark colored metal pieces. These are Arte metal from Vintaj.
