There are a number of pretty mixed media chain necklace ideas out there. But this tutorial by Trinkets in Bloom is unusual in that an old broken crystal necklace is recycled and added to the design.
The yarn portion is braided but you could also crochet or knit this portion. It is best worn like a choker so the focal part of the necklace really does justice to this makeover project.

Great makeover - pinning this! I have a pile of people's broken jewelry, now I can surprise someone :) The choice of yarn or thread is important - it should look grand with the rhinestones and this yarn does look great!
