I don't know about you but having to order rivets specially for jewelry making can be a pain.  But I loved the idea from Tracy Stanley, the designer and author of the wire and metal book I reviewed not too long ago.  She showed in this tutorial how easy it is to use just regular hardware store escutcheon pins as nail rivets.

Once most of the nail shaft is cut off, then patient tapping with the riveting hammer is the key to setting it.

Just learning how to rivet will increase your creative options. Wire and riveting are the two most useful cold connection techniques.

Her book, Exploring Metal Jewelry is chockful of tips and tricks and above all, awesome inspirations once you master those skills. No need for torch work!
