I won a Gilbert chemistry set at kiddie bingo and I got a Gilbert microscope for Christmas. I got a BS in Micro and Public Health and a minor in Chemistry. I worked ad a Medical Technologist in a human hospital lab for 13.5 years and then switched to a research microbiologist at a veterinary college. When I retired 25 years later, I had become a micro/molecular biologist. I had to learn different ways to analyse DNA because this knowledge was not available when I was in college. I taught graduate students and we learned many things together. I was an author on a few papers my boss and the graduate students published in science journals. I really enjoyed my jobs and encourage girls or women to follow a path in the STEM system. Women can be and are great scientists, technologists, engineers and mathematicians.Dots-Dangleshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09220661665841261011noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7312145685876120575.post-24668313077115225972020-05-12T15:33:55.942-04:002020-05-12T15:33:55.942-04:00Oh my gosh, what a stellar lineup of inspirational...Oh my gosh, what a stellar lineup of inspirational women! Both my grandmothers were illiterate because girls were not sent to school in their time. This was a great source of frustration to both women. In our family, we went from illiteracy to university education in just 2 generations, so fast was the change! The Beading Gemhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10373750828368944711noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7312145685876120575.post-51637230611436454942020-05-12T12:20:42.856-04:002020-05-12T12:20:42.856-04:00Wonderful article, Pearl. He refused to allow them to continue beyond the 8th grade. For one time in their marriage, their mother (my Nanny) stood up to the father and insisted that they continue. It wasn't an easy fight, but in the end, she prevailed and the girls were allowed to continue on to high school. Their father did add the proviso that they could only so long as they didn't make any grade less than an "A". They all succeeded and finished in the top of their classes. Nanny sold eggs, and that money was hers. She insisted that each of the sisters was going to be trained in a trade since it was obvious that they would not be allowed to go to college. Nanny loaned her egg money to each of the sisters in turn so that they could go to trade school which they each did. They each paid the money back so that the next sister could go to a trade school also. By the way, Nanny and her sister were daughters of a physician who did believe in education for women. Nanny was a teacher and spent many years as a teacher on a Navajo reservation and her sister, Pearl, was a pharmacist.Waynehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05247513621544176208noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7312145685876120575.post-82660670186042260472020-05-12T12:18:25.415-04:002020-05-12T12:18:25.415-04:00That is a great study!
