The historical era known as the Regency marked the time when the then Prince of Wales (the future George IV) had to become the Regent after his father, King George III of Great Britain became permanently insane. The Regency era officially spanned only 9 years from 1811-1820. However, the era and its influence on design, art and culture (for the rich) is generally regarded to be from 1795-1837.

A Quick Look at Regency Fashion
Regency women's fashion was notably high waisted and the dresses were a lot lighter than the period before then. It was considered quite scandalous for being more revealing!
One thing that's quite irksome is the portrayal of corsets being horribly uncomfortable. Women in the Regency period and before wore much more comfortable stays as you can see from this video which portrays how the famous writer Jane Austen (1775-1817) and her beloved sister, Cassandra might have gotten dressed for the day.
Zach Pinsent, is the young British artisan behind Pinsent Tailoring where he makes bespoke period costumes for clients. He stopped wearing modern clothes when he was just 14 because he much prefers historical men's clothing. Watch this short 2019 BBC feature on this remarkable self taught tailor.
The Regency period marked the beginning of much more sombre colours in men's fashion. Before then, men, just like the women, wore bright colours and ornate clothing if they could afford it. It's all about showing off one's power and wealth. I highly recommend you watch this wonderful video (below) where Zach Pinsent explains the "secrets" behind men's fashion through history.
For example, the Regency marked the turning point where blue started to become a men's colour and pink was thought a female one. Before then, the reverse was true. Men wore pink because it was the dilute version of red, a masculine colour as often used in the military uniforms of the British Army at the time. Pink therefore insinuated power. (Side historical note : red was initially chosen for the uniforms because red dye was cheap and colour fast. Rural women and girls a few centuries ago often wore red hooded cloaks - think little Red Riding Hood - for the same reason)
