Our workshops are held at Cole Harbour Heritage Farm Museum where they have many old implements from long ago. It's fun to try and guess the purpose of some of the things they have on display.
That gave me a idea - what do you think this old piece of jewelry was? Go, on! Make a guess by leaving a comment. This English design by an unknown artisan dates back to the 13th century. The answer in a few days!

At first I thought it was a bottle opener. But can't be that. Something to do with a belt extender? or belt decoration?
ReplyDeleteOh gee. Um .. a fastener of some sort? A brooch with duel bottle openers?
ReplyDeleteI have no clue. :)
Let's see...that is a TOUGHIE! Maybe it was used as some type of a sceptre? Or, if its 13th Century, perhaps it was some kind of ornate trade piece?
ReplyDeletelove this game - does it hold "napkins" in place?
ReplyDeletepeace for all
Maybe a kind of fibula or clip to hold together a cape around the neck? Or a horse pit? But that would be too highly embellished for that.
ReplyDeleteMaybe a buckle for ribbon to slide through, for waist, hair, etc. You really know how to pick them Pearl! Fun. Millie a Beadsister!
ReplyDeleteLove the bottle opener guess! hehe I was thinking something for holding a cape or jacket too.
ReplyDeleteIt's not really fair not to include dimensions or materials or at least a sense of scale... but this object is intriguing!:)
ReplyDeleteHello everyone:
ReplyDeleteI think it is a dress cincher (used in back of a dress to pull in the waist and make it appear smaller).
Cheers
Willena
My guess would be a cloak clasp and a beautiful one at that.
ReplyDeleteI don't think the dimensions really matter in making the guess. Sizing will just depend on whether it was for a man, woman or child. Men in those days wore pretty ornate jewelry too.
ReplyDeleteMaterials too are not a clue except about the relative wealth of the wearer. Answer on Monday!
Hi there! This is gorgeous!! Not sure of its original use, but it would be wonderful as a focal piece in a necklace with different ribbons, like velvet, strung through the loops and tied at the neck. Can't wait to see the answer!
ReplyDeleteIt looks like a cloak clasp to me, but it would need a couple of pins to go through the two "ends"
ReplyDeleteWhatever it is, it's gorgeous :)
It is shawl holder, or a wrap stabilizer. I am not sure of the name, but these are used to hold a wrap in place.
ReplyDeleteThe answer is in this blog post - http://www.beadinggem.com/2009/03/13th-century-gold-double-ring-brooch.html !!
