I adore arts and crafts and thoroughly enjoy browsing through the gorgeous handmade items offered for sale on Etsy. But as the new Regretsy website points out, buried in the tens of thousands of craft items are some awful doozies which make you go "Handmade? It looks like you made it with your feet." After seeing the real moose poop necklace on the right, I get what they are about!
The website highlights the worst of Etsy in an amusing way. The Regretsy team explains all in their disclaimer section :
"Don’t get us wrong. We like crafts.
We just don’t like these crafts.
Yes, we know these people put their hearts into it. We know it took hours and hours. We know how mean it is to laugh at their creations. And we regret being the only web site on the internet that makes fun of things.
But what can we do? We’re immature.
Besides, art is totally subjective. Who cares what we think? I barely care and I’m writing this.
Listen, if you like something you see here, don’t argue with us, go and buy it. Seriously. Click on any photo and you’ll be taken to the seller’s store. We’re only too glad to have made the introduction.
Otherwise, we’re just going to sit here and look at the amputee kitten paintings and vulva earrings and laugh so hard that we pee in our reusable Pokemon pads."
The team handpicks the actual Etsy listings as well as accepts submissions from readers. Don't feel too sorry for the stores they have skewered. If you check out Regretsy news, a number of the stores have made sales and garnered a whole ton of free publicity. One, Bixbie’s Curios who makes the catnip fetus toys (shown below) reported several sales AND got featured in the Wall Street Journal's Speakeasy blog earlier this month!
So let's giggle through some of the submissions. Some of them are downright scary.

Oh wow....
ReplyDeleteEtsy is so hilarious! Even I sometimes wonder why I include certain items in my shop :-) Although I have to admit I think that birth education doll is pretty hilarious!
OMG, I remember that I saw an ad for elk poo jewelry a few years ago, when the Olympic Games took place in Lillehammer. They advertised a local jewelry maker and his signature work was elk poo jewelry. I laughed my a... off back then! Thanks for sharing, Pearl! It gave me a good laugh.
ReplyDeleteYou know, I'll bet there are buyers for all these items too!
ReplyDeleteE-e-e-w-w when I first saw the pic of the moose poop necklace - my first thought was root beer jelly beans! Ick! To the moose poop, not jelly beans.
ReplyDeleteAlso - I had to hop over to that site to make sure I wasn't on it before I commented!
Great idea for a site!
Ditto...ewwww! Moose poop, dead prairie dog paw...awwww. But it takes all kinds I guess and style is subjective as well.
ReplyDeleteWOW...some people have such an unusual imagination...not that it is a bad thing just different...but I would think they have buyers!!!
ReplyDeleteHad to check out the Regretsy site...:o)
Cheers
