I really liked Go Make Something's rolled paper beads tutorial because she makes it look so Japanese. Embossing ink was used but her idea of adding metallic embroidery thread was inspiring! She includes many tips and other suggestions.

Being Natasha Fialkov takes it one level up with her how to adorn paper beads tutorial using modge podge, decoupage glue, glittery stuff, paint and whatever strikes your fancy. (link no longer works)

Do the paper strips have to have straight edges? Nope. Just check out designarob's tutorial on and see how using a zig zab blade on a paper cutter gives a whole new look to traditional rolled paper beads.

If you make the strips very narrow, you get spacer beads! This tutorial from the Paper Beads site also suggests you use nail polish to finish them.

iHanna of Creative Space blog has an alternative round bead tutorial where she makes paper mache beads. She drills the holes after the beads are dried. The embellishment step is what takes the longest.
