Unusual Face Wire Jewelry by RubyMoonJewel Requires No Piercings

Ohio based wire artisan, Ruby of RubyMoonJewel has a striking and unusual wire jewelry collection. She makes face wire designs. The designs which meander across the face are actually modified extensions of ear cuffs. Most innovative indeed.

Also noteworthy are her faux nose and lip rings. Again, these are adapted from the ear cuff idea. So no piercings are needed. This is a very good thing. Our mouths are normally full of mostly harmless bacteria but some can cause tooth decay and gum disease. That is why lip (and tongue) piercings are more prone to infections.

Light Up Chandelier Earrings by dianacaldarescu

I thought my recycled real chandelier crystal earrings were novel. However, Diana's chandelier earrings are pure genius. They are not only miniature ones but they actually light up!   She also has non- light up chandelier earrings in her shop, dianacalderscu.

She creates her unique designs using "brass, dollhouse lighting fixtures, flexible gold plated ear wraps and clear Swarovski teardrop crystals."

Their handmade wearable latex pieces are all custom colored. Kurt, who has been working with latex for over 20 years explained :
All of my pieces are hand squeezed individually one at time wet on wet and left to air dry. I recently started combining glass crystals and eyes to my work.

Unusual Jewelry Made from Jewel Beetle Wings

Humans have worn jewelry for over 100,000 years.  These prehistory pieces were made from natural materials like sea shells and egg shells.  This practice hasn't changed to present day.

One of the more unusual materials are the iridescent wings from large jewel beetles (Buprestidae family).  Shown above are jewel beetle chandelier earrings. The designer is iKalindi.

These prized insects are very common in some Asian countries like India and Thailand. The wings have been traditionally used in the decorative arts. In Thailand, insects are also a food source,  hence the discarded wings are repurposed!

The larval stage of the beetles are wood borers. One species of that beetle family, the emerald ash borer is not destructive in its native north eastern Asian habitat. But it is now an an invasive species in Europe and North America, affecting ash trees not accustomed to these insects.

The iridescent green jewel beetle wings below are sold by DollarDolls, a Thai supplier.  This color seems to be the most common hue.

This fantastic bead embroidered statement necklace also features jewel beetle wings!  The design is by IleanaEnchantedBeads.

Watch this fascinating Victoria and Albert Museum video showcasing a muslin dress (1868-69) decorated with jewel beetle wings.  This was for their 2019 exhibition, "Fashioned from Nature". The presenter is Max Barclay, a beetle curator from the Natural History Museum in London.

Hand Painted and Pyrography Wood Jewelry from Fallen Tree Branches

San Diego based Mandy Holasek of LadyDryad makes unusual wood jewelry.  The word Dryad is a give away because a dryad is a tree nymph or tree spirit in Greek mythology.  Mandy is tree spirited because all of her wood jewelry is sourced from naturally fallen tree branches!  Recycling jewelry at its natural best!

She is also a whiz at pyrography or wood burning with fine heated tools.  Some of her work is also hand painted - no easy task especially with some of her smaller design pieces! She finishes her pieces with resin for that shiny look.

Real Acorn Jewelry by Nuttier than a Squirrel

Real Acorn with Ruby Zoisite Earrings
One wonderful example of a found object artisan is Chrystal Nausse who is based in New Orleans. She makes real acorn jewelry out of the acorn cupules or caps she finds. Her shop name is unforgettable - Nuttier than a Squirrel. What I like about her minimalist style is how she teams up the acorn caps with many different kinds of gemstones. These gemstones add color to her designs.

Thigh Gap Jewelry - For Real or Not?

I may have tried tricking readers on April Fool's Day before. But this is not a prank. Thigh gap jewelry? Seriously?  They do exist. Sort of.  The gold plated jewelry is real enough on TGap Jewelry but the collection isn't for sale. The website though, looks just like an actual shopping site. But as soon as you click anywhere on it, the TGap story pops up  and explains it is not a real company at all.
