On one hand, it seems like a dream come true if you could work at home especially if you have a young family, and be your own boss. But is it really a viable alternative?
So I thought it would be fun to do my first in-post poll to find out how many of you make jewelry just for fun as well as those who have a hankering to do more. Please vote and check for the results! Do also share your experiences by commenting below.

I haven't made anything in SO long! At least not jewelry. Although I design things in my head all the time!
ReplyDeleteFascinating article and very true as well.

Personally I think those who do this as a hobby and attempt to sell undermine those of us who NEED this for our living. This is my only source of income. I have a mortgage and bills to pay with no sugar daddy husband paying them so I can "play". But when I go to shows, I often hear from non-buying customers "Oh what a fun hobby!" There was a time when you had to prove you had a storefront and a serious business to get into shows. I wish that were still true.
ReplyDeleteI don't think those who make jewelry as a hobby will undermine those who do it for a living provided they price fairly.
ReplyDeleteToo often, there are crafters to charge so little that people begin to associate hand made goods as cheap. The reverse should happen. People need to be educated that hand made is, when created by talented artisans, designer and often one of a kind quality.
