Are you hankering to start your own online handmade craft store but are afraid of the additional costs? Or are you an established artisan looking for more ways to sell your wares?
Here is a sweet giveaway for you. A free shop for life at the Handmade Artists' Shop (HAS) for one lucky winner! No monthly fees, no listing fees, no commission charges, ever. Sounds great, doesn't it?
It's also a timely giveaway because Artfire recently announced they are getting rid of their free (basic) shops. So if this affects you and you don't want to pay for a pro shop, try your luck here!
HAS is the newest of the 3 online ventures by the couple of chain maille artisans behind Making the Best of It (MBOI) whom I have featured before. Both Andrew and Kimberly Kitchen are so passionate about handmade designs, they started the Handmade Artists' Forum (HAF) as well as the accompanying blog to build a friendly community of like-minded individuals.
About a year ago, they began HAS, a logical progression from the forum as many artisans needed an online venue. As with any new beginning, there were some growing pains. The original site was not as user friendly as they liked. So they recently relaunched HAS using a different platform which is now "100 times better than our old platform!"
HAS charges $5 a month ($50 a year, a savings of $10) but has no listings and no commission fees. It's a very inexpensive way to have a website showing your wares. The shop is extensively promoted via Facebook, Twitter, Plurk and Stumbleupon. They also do paid advertising through Google Adwords and Project Wonderful. (In the interest of full disclosure, I have indeed spotted their HAS Project Wonderful ads on my blog now and then).
One thing I like about HAS is the emphasis on addressing some of the pet peeves artisans have about other online market places. Their top priority is for handmade. No commercial supplies (unless they are handmade supplies like ear wires, clasps, polymer beads or lamp work beads you make), no unaltered vintage, no mass produced items and no resale listings.
I asked them how they would define handmade. This is what Kimberley had to say :
"As far as our definition of handmade, we racked our brains to find a line…and found out that there isn’t one! There is so much gray area that we couldn’t make a definitive rule. What we decided was that if you buy mass produced charms and put it on a mass produced chain, we don’t call that handmade. We feel that handmade, including bead stringers, must put a bit of themselves into the piece. A person that buys a stash of beads and puts them together is showing their talent and creativity in their own way. I say this because if I handed the same stash of beads to 10 people, they would string them differently from each other! If I handed those same 10 a batch of charms and chain, they would all look the same.
We don’t expect knitters to shear the sheep and spin the yarn any more than we expect all jewelry artists to create their own beads and findings (though those who do are so cool!) but we do expect to be able to see your personality in each piece. Because of all the gray area in the what is handmade argument that shows up on every forum and site, we are taking everything on a case by case basis and doing the best we can to keep HAS a purely handmade marketplace where our vendors can stand proud amongst other artists." Well said!
HAS is definitely a safe, family orientated site. No mature items are allowed. I count myself as a broad-minded person but some Etsy listings sure do make my eyebrows shoot up!
HAS also does feature designer articles on their front page in a fair manner. There is no favoritism. Someone who makes low sales will have an equal chance of being featured as does a hot seller. It is first come, first served so long as your shop has a minimum of 10 items. Makes sense as there is no advantage in sending visitors to a near empty shop.

wow.. pearl.. this one is a cool giveaway... the will be-winner of this giveaway is really lucky.
ReplyDeleteA venue which features ONLY handmade...what a concept!!! Please put my name in the barrel :) I'm also a Facebook follower.
ReplyDeleteSweeeet! I was really bummed when I found out I would be losing my artfire basic shop :( Winning this giveaway would be a lifesaver!!! I'm a facebook and twitter follower!
ReplyDeleteI'm a facebook follower and a subscriber.
ReplyDeleteI'm glad you brought to my attention that they revamped the site. I remember the first release, I might never have gone back to the site if it wasn't for this giveaway.
I am a little leery about the fact that it's only handmade, though. I love the idea, but I know that a large portion of sales/traffic on other sites is generated by supply sellers. No harm in trying it out, though.
Great opportunity, Pearl! Thanks! I would love to win this, especially with my potential book deal in the works! I also am a blog subscriber and follow on Facebook. (when Facebook lets me see the posts from pages I have "liked." Honestly, it is such a crap shoot sometimes there.)
ReplyDeleteI'm in the middle of migrating my ArtFire inventory to my Etsy and was thinking how nice it was going to be to only be tending to one shop. So I must be a little off in the head lol but sign me up Pearl!
ReplyDeleteBlog, Facebook and Twitter follower!
Dana
I would love to win this. I am a blog subscriber and Facebook follower. I make handmade jewelry, you can visit my facebook page..Cai's Unique Designs. This is a wonderful opportunity. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteI'm very glad to hear of this site! And even happier to try it winning this for free!
ReplyDeleteI'm a blog subscriber and I follow you on twitter and facebook. I look forward to your great posts every single day. You never disappoint me, either.
ReplyDeleteI would love to win this free shop for life. HAS looks like a beautiful site and I would like to add a venue.
Please add me to your giveaway..thank you!
Those fees are much better than Etsy!
ReplyDelete(facebook and blog subscriber)
Wow, free shop for life. Hope to win this too. Will check out their website soon. Seems cheaper rates compared to Etsy.com
ReplyDeleteThis would be so terrific to win!! Thanks so much for the opportunity to bring home a forum where an artist can showcase their handmade goods and not have to worry about costs. Some of us older crafters (I'm 58, disabled and live on Social Security) have to very carefully watch our few dollars...there are times when even $5 a month is a lot!! Thanks again!
ReplyDeleteThis is "The Giveaway" of the year...as a person affected by artfire's new policy (unable to pay fees in dollars!!) This is just a dream come true for me. I have been making some cool stuff recently and I really hope that I win it
ReplyDeleteI follow you through GFC and like you on facebook
ReplyDeleteGreat giveaway, Pearl! Sounds like a great site. Please add me to the drawing. I follow the blog, Twitter, and FB.
ReplyDeleteyay what a giveaway!! here to try my luck too;+). May the lucky winner make the very best of it!!
ReplyDeleteWhat a great opportunity, it sounds like a great venue. I tweeted and liked it too.
ReplyDeleteWhat a great idea.
ReplyDeleteI was searching for something just like this. Etsy.com is good, and I like it but this sounds worth checking out also. I am a small time jeweler, but have plenty of room to expand.
ReplyDeleteI'm so excited about this giveaway! Thanks for the opportunity to enter! I'm also a blog subscriber.

Pearl, once again, a great giveaway. I'm so glad you chose to write about this site. I didn't know about them, so I will definitely go check it out. As a fairly new blogger/beader, all the options out there can be overwhelming. Thanks for your clear, concise blogs. :)
ReplyDeleteWow - this is an astounding give-away! I have had this on my mind for some time...but money always gets in the way (the lack of, that is!) This would be oh, so neat!
ReplyDeleteI have had some bad experiences in the past, but this place is the real deal, and it would give me great joy to be able to put my things here!
I think I'm a follower (know you are on my Google reader feed - also facebook and twitter.
my site: http://beadblessed.com/
Would love to get in on the drawing!
ReplyDeleteThis could be just the site I am looking for...thanks for the giveaway!
ReplyDeleteI am a subscriber and follower on facebook.
I'm also a FB fan.
ReplyDeleteThat would be awesome. The winner would definitely be lucky! I make handmade jewelry too. (mostly a mix of chainmaille and beads) Count me in! I am also a follower on Facebook. :)
ReplyDeleteJust found you from a Facebook link through Blue Buddha Boutique! I think HAS sounds like an awesome and inexpensive way to get started. I've been looking for something like this! A free shop for a year would be awesome! I just became a Facebook follower as well. I hope I win, but anyone who does will be soooo lucky!!! Lori
ReplyDeleteSounds like an awesome giveaway!
ReplyDeleteYeap, I'm in the same boat as a lot of people. Don't want to pay the $9.95 at Artfire. Hate to pay the listing cost and commission at etsy...but still want an online presence. I would love to win the giveaway!
ReplyDeleteI saw this on facebook and think it's an amazing giveaway! Looking into HAS was on my list of to-dos for this week already. A free shop would be a delightful bonus.
ReplyDeleteHAS sounds like an awesome site. I don't get as much product made as I would like to, because I'm not into making the same thing over and over. So there's more creativity involved, and I don't know about others, but mine has to be rekindled from time to time. I would love to be involved!
ReplyDeleteyou're awsome, too:-) I really enjoy being a subscriber and FB follower -- one of the few blogs I really do read every day!!! And I'm primarily a painter, not a beader.
ReplyDeleteWould love this opportunity since $$ are what's been preventing me from opening a shop.
What an awesome opportunity for artisans to build their business! I checked out their website, and really like it! Please count me in, I am a blog, twitter, and facebook follower. Gina
ReplyDeleteGreat blog Pearl! So nice to meet you.
ReplyDeletePlease enter me for a chance to win.
Thanks,
Laurie-Anne
WOW would love to win this just starting out and would love to win it thanks
ReplyDeleteThis is a timely give-away for me, since I am getting ready to open my own shop. I will definitely check this site out as well, since their fees are much lower than either Etsy or ArtFire.
ReplyDeleteI follow your blog and love it.
Wow, what a great giveaway!!! I hope I win, but will be happy for whomever does win!! Thanx for the opportunity!
ReplyDeletethank you for the opportunity to win!
ReplyDeletethank you for the opportunity to win!

ReplyDeleteThis looks like a great place to join. They are "liked" by me and I need to go back and check out the rest of the site :)
ReplyDeleteI would love to win this!!!! I had thought about starting and Etsy or Artfire Shop but this would be so much better. Thanks for the chance to win!!
ReplyDeleteI love this blog! I read it everyday and have made many aware of it.
ReplyDeleteThis is a great opportunity to get in on the ground floor of a site that I believe has unlimited potential plus there is the bonus of being able to converse with a wonderful community of other artisans there.
ReplyDeleteI have followed and love your blog, facebook and twitter for some time now Pearl :)
YoursTruli

ReplyDeleteThanks Pearl for hosting this giveaway for us. We work very hard to support handmade, (seems like 24/7) sometimes LOL

ReplyDeleteI found HAF a few months ago and I love those people! I introduced my self, listed my shops and participated in the Facebook feature where all took turns sharing each others info on our Facebook page. I had a great time meeting all the crafty people and have had a lot of traffic come from the forum. I would love to have a shop there as well. Thanks for hosting this great contest!
ReplyDeleteSounds like a concept whose time has finally come. Please toss my name into the hat.
ReplyDeleteI'm a follower of your blog and a facebook friend. And, though I know it doesn't count, your etsy shop is on my etsy favorites list and you're in my etsy Circle, I'd really perfer to have the old forums back than the new Etsy Social Circles. :D
What a great opportunity. Thank you. I have been putting off starting a site on my own. I am trying to come up with a name. At least 30% and up to 100% of the profit from anything I sell will go straight to charity. I am thinking maybe For Every Season Jewelry or Blessing Jewelry or some such....any suggestions are most welcome. Thanks and God bless your day, deb
ReplyDeleteThis is the best giveaway that I have ever seen. I would love to win this. I'd be the first edible ( that I know of) to join and it would be an honor. I'm also a subscriber and a follower on Facebook and Twitter. I've been in debate about joining for quite some time now and even $5/month can be tough when sales are low to none in the economy. This is just wonderful

Thanks. This is a wonderful giveaway. I'd love to win this. I'm one of the Basic shops on Artfire losing my shop. I've never had good traffic there or any sales, so it's just not cost effective for me to pay for a shop, even though I've been there since 2008. I'd love to have a HAF shop.

ReplyDeleteLooks like you have quite a following here. I'll toss my name in the hat.
ReplyDeleteNever heard of that site but the internet is always changing. Never hurts to try new things. Even if I don't win, never hurts to have your eggs (be them polymer clay covered ones) in more than one basket.
Jen
Good Morning – I would like to post a comment and enter your contest. However, I don’t think I had success yesterday and I have tried today too. I am enclosing my post in case you can help. Thank You!
ReplyDelete(via email)
You're entered! Pearl
How wonderful! Its so hard trying to sell on "handmade" sites when my poor little shop is overwhelmed by resellers!
ReplyDeleteHi-- Glad to enter your giveaway. Am a new follower on Facebook, Twitter and this blog.
ReplyDeleteI was one of the free Artfire accts but never made sales there. Had a couple people contact me there and made sales on Etsy! (go figure). Am loving Etsy. Am happy with the low fees and the community there...and I also sell on Ebay.
How I would love to win this, it would be a welcome change. I am not having such a great time with Etsy, maybe the change would do me good!
ReplyDeleteThanks Pearl for the chance!
Thanks for the wonderful information. I had not heard of this service. I will definitely check it out.
ReplyDeleteI am also a follower. Thanks
ReplyDeleteI'm a follower, and a twitter follower. Not sure if I followed you on twitter before today, but I do now! :)
ReplyDeleteThis is a great opportunity, thanks Pearl! :)

Wow. A free lifetime deal? I'm in! I just found this venue through a friend of mine on facebook. Looks interesting and I may have to join even if I don't win. :) I'm also a facebook fan AND a blog subscriber!
ReplyDeleteWhat a great way to point us to another online marketplace option. Thanks!

This is a wonderful opportunity & a very generous give-away! Also thinking about signing up even if I don't win since Artfire will no longer have the free option :j

What a great giveaway! So excited for the person who wins.
ReplyDeleteI'm also a FB fan.
Extremely nice give-away! The info about HAS is excellent. I hope the site does well and lots of new artisans sign up. I may be one of them even if I do not win!
ReplyDeleteThanks again for this opportunity. I enjoyed reading your blog for the first time today.
Wow that would be awesome! I was online looking for free or nearly free venues to sell my jewelry. :)
ReplyDeleteI'm a subscriber via Google Reader.
I HAVE WANTED TO START AN ONLINE LINE SHOP ...SOMEWHERE..BUT IT ALL SEEMS A LITTLE CONFUSING AND EXPENSIVE. WINNING THIS WOULD CERTAINLY BE A GREAT WAY TO GET STARTED , BUT EVEN IF I DID'NT WIN I THINK I'M GOING TO START ONE UP HERE ANYWAY.
