Australian crafter, Dom, designed and wrote the tutorial which not only saves money but recycles an old style clothes hanger as well!
She uses needlepoint plastic mesh for the central part. I think Aida cloth will also be suitable if you prefer.

Nice and simple! I'm thinking copper mesh or even fly screen would also make a great alternative to the plastic mesh. Metal screen would have a little more of a natural look to it.
