Kristin St Clair from the Martha Stewart site designed the Mesh Ombre Necklace. There are four strands of carefully graduated colored pearls or crystals within the tube of wire lace.There is also a video tutorial at the site which is the quickest way to see how it's done.
Unfortunately, apart from the video, there are no step by step pictures - just words. But as luck would have it, one show fan actually documented her version with photos (shown below) on her blog called Lemmemakeit.
