Rope or thick cord necklaces are still hot and trendy. I've covered a number of tutorials before. They often use chain which are lashed to the cord.  But I like this sewn bead and rope necklace tutorial (no longer availabe over on For the Makers.  The use of malachite against the white rope with black thread and gold tone bead accents is lovely.

The construction of this necklace is definitely worth a look! What makes this necklace pop is the use of short lengths of black and grey cord to the focal area.  The designer cleverly binds all three together with black thread.

Another rope necklace tutorial (no longer available) worth looking at is the one by Geneva Vanderzeil over on A Pair and a Spare. I love how she sewed on jumbo sequins (pailettes). Sequins are wonderful to use as "beads". Geneva gives the source of those pailettes if you want to buy some.
