Metal work is not all that scary. Not if you try a simple project like the hammered and riveted flat wire bangle tutorial by Kelsey over on the Loose Ends blog (Shipwreck Beads). It requires steps like cutting a length with metal shears, filing, forming over a suitable mandrel and riveting the bangle closed.
The instructor shows many different ideas for embellishing the bangles - stamping and wrapping a rhinestone chain are two of my favorites. I would also suggest texturing the entire bangle with the round part of a hammer (see ring tutorial below).
You can buy flat wire strips from suppliers. Alternatively, you can get some really thick wire like 12G or 14G and hammer it flat. It will have a rustic look to it for sure.
