Shrink plastic has been around for decades and have never lost their popularity. Jewelry makers who are also artists can use the material for fun and funky ideas. One great tutorial is by Gloria Fort Mir who came up with a hanging cactus necklace design. Making it a planter is a great idea. Sure it is quirky and not for everyone but there are those who love quirky!
If you're good at hand-drawn whimsies, this tutorial is for you. Just remember that you have to draw approximately 3 x the final size of the piece you want.
