Some people use a vice to hold the wire ends which makes it easier to start the braiding process. You could also use bull dog clips perhaps? Anything to make the beginning more manageable and not make you feel like you need an extra pair of hands.
Smaller projects like earrings and bracelets are also suitable as you will not be using very long wire lengths. There is the risk of wire bending when they are very long. Having said that, you might love the challenge of working with long wires so check out the first tutorial below.
