Book Review and Giveaway : Mastering Wirework Jewelry

Rachel Norris is an acclaimed British wire work jewelry designer I have featured before.  Her flora and fauna inspired pieces reflect the natural beauty of her native Cornwall.  Her talent lies in her imaginative creativity which captures  the forms of flowers and creatures with wire and beads.

I recently received her first book, Mastering Wirework Jewelry for review. It is published by GMC Publications and is available either at Taunton Store or on Amazon.

As the title implies, this is a masterclass in book form. The 15 original pendant and brooch designs featured are intricate and innovative.  All are outstanding -  making it hard to select the ones I liked to feature. At just over 300 pages, it is also one of the thickest jewelry project books I have seen. That is because it is packed with detailed construction details and many tips.

She uses a number of wire work techniques such as wire wrapping, wire weaving and wire coiling. Templates to help form the frames are given at the back of the book.

She also integrates beads and cabochons into her design.  What is noticeable are the clever ways she traps the cabochon focals. The wire work is as lovely at the back as it is in the front.

She also forms wire designs in front of large gemstones where the latter add color and shape to her designs.

If I had to choose, her wire wrapped horse brooch is perhaps the most inspiring as the designer manages to express movement in her design. No mean feat.

This is a remarkable masterclass of a book to take wire work to a whole new level!  If you are looking for a challenge and new ways of working with wire, this book will deliver. Highly recommended.

  32. Rachel Norris has definitely taken the art of wireworking to a new level!

What got me with your review Pearl was that the book is over 300 pages long and it's for 15 projects? Wow! Each project must have extremely detailed instructions (and templates too? Oh my!)!

Looking at each piece you've shown I'm just blown away by the intricacy of the details.

Like the owl. The eyes simply pop with the detail around them along with the feathers at the top. You know me and owls Pearl and this one took my breath away.

As did the horse! You know me and horses too - and this definitely is a horse in motion. I wanted both of them.

Looking at the previous comments I can see that there are many people who are into wire work and are drooling over this book.

Rachel has to be happy with the response she is getting just through your blog!

I am doing some good pieces, but I could really use some clarification on best ways to wrap intricate designs, what to do first, second, how to finish off things. Also, I like working in different types of wire. This book would be put to good use! lisawhistler@gmail.com
