I am rather fond of thick leather cord necklaces because they are ideal for showcasing focals. This  round maille and crystal tutorial by Kylie Jones does exactly that. It is easy enough for beginners. You don't have to do too much chain maille especially if you want to work with stainless steel (tougher) or have strained wrists.

Using a round dowel helps the weave. The wire work at both ends of the chain maille tube is necessary to stop it from moving.

Any dangle can be used - not just crystals!  I can see a wire wrapped cabochon being used, can't you?
