Granulation is a 5,000 year old metalwork technique which the Ancient Etruscans mastered. How they did it remained a mystery until the 20th century ! Today, metalsmiths like US based Dana Evans of danaevansstudio are able to incorporate little metal balls into beautiful modern designs.
Many of her pieces include gemstones. Dana's love of gemstones dates back to her childhood when her father and her shared a passion for lapidary. She recalls, "Dad and I would then spend hours tumbling these rough rocks into finished gems- a magical transformation!"
Her jewelry designs are influenced by her training as an architect. She says, "Architectural forms and details float in my brain, always ready to offer up a great shape or pattern." She adds, "Technique, shape and tradition are my foundation, but I add my own modern aesthetic."
