The History of Queen Elizabeth II's Spectacular Jewelry Collection | The Passing of an Era | Diamond Maple Leaf Brooch

Queen Elizabeth II and the Diamond Maple Leaf Brooch (Picture Source)

Queen Elizabeth II's remarkable long reign might well become known as the Second Elizabethan Age. She ruled over seven decades, through many upheavals and changes, all with an unwavering deep sense of duty and graciousness. A class act and near universally admired. No mean feat considering the dark legacy of Britain's colonial past, anti-monarchy sentiment and recent Royal scandals.

Her passing drew great sadness across the globe.  For most of us, she was the only Queen we knew.

The Woman Who Designed Two Fabergé Imperial Easter Eggs

The famous Peter Carl Fabergé workshop in St Petersburg, designed and produced a total of 50 unique handmade bejeweled Easter Eggs for the Russian Royal Family from 1885 - 1917. Fabergé was an astute businessman who employed some of the best craftsmen in the industry. He and his staff were given complete design freedom and carte blanche to create the eggs. Each egg typically took a year to make.

Alma Pihl was a rarity - one of only two female designers in the company.  Her Finnish grandfather, August Holmström, was Faberge's lead jeweler. She was the niece of the other female designer, Hilma Alina Holmström. Her uncle and brother were also master jewelers.

The Art and History of 100 years of Peranakan Jewelry

Jewelry rarely survives through the ages. They were often disassembled and remade into more fashionable pieces. So archaeological finds such as those found at Sutton Hoo or buried hoards like the medieval jewelry from the time of the Black Death are important because they give us an idea of what jewelry looked like in a particular place and time. Another reason why jewelry disappears is during wartime.

I was born and raised in Malaysia as part of a unique South East Asian fusion culture - a descendant of predominantly 15th -16th century Chinese male immigrants who married local Malay women in South East Asia. There was significant trade between the imperial Chinese empire and the region for many centuries, long before the Europeans arrived, as the area is where the famed spice islands are located. According to historians, some of the early settlers might have came from Kublai Khan's large combined Chinese and Mongol invasion fleet  in the 13th century.

The Peranakan, as they became to be known as, settled mostly in some parts of Indonesia, Penang and Malacca in Malaysia (once British Malaya) and in Singapore.

The Discovery of the Sutton Hoo Treasures as Told in the Movie The Dig

Sutton Hoo, located in Suffolk (north-east of London), is the site of richest archaeological find in British history. The extraordinary discovery of a ship burial site has been retold Netflix's new offering, The Dig, starring Carey Mulligan and Ralph Fiennes.  The movie is based on the historical novel of the same name, by John Preston.

While the movie displayed creative license with historical fact, the central plot is true. A wealthy widow, Edith Pretty, who had an interest in archaeology, hired a local self-taught archaeologist (and astronomer), Basil Brown to dig the 18 burial earth mounds or "barrows" on her property.

Bedazzling Jewelry at the Romanov 1903 Costume Ball

One of the most tragic royal stories has to be that of the ill-fated Romanovs of Russia. The last of their line perished in 1918 in a cellar of a house in Yekaterinburg. Their story still intrigues many to this day. A new book, The Romanov Royal Martyrs is out. This family biography is "Based strictly on primary sources, the book offers previously unpublished texts in English."

The book's beautiful colorized photographs of the Royal Family and their court were done by Russian artist,  Olga Shirnina who graciously allowed me to share in this post.  Her work brought this family and their court to life.

The Virgin Queen's Jewels

When she was born, no one thought Elizabeth I of England  (1533-1603) would grow up to become queen, let alone one of the greatest queens in history.  Her more than 40 years on the throne brought relative peace and prosperity to England after the unsettling reigns of her half-brother Edward and half sister, Mary and before that, of their father, Henry VIII.

Queen Marie de Medici and the Beau Sancy Diamond

Marie de Medici (1575 - 1642) was like her Medici predecessor, the notorious and murderous Catherine de Medici, in that they both came from the fabulously wealthy Italian banking family and both became Regent Queens of France. A stubborn and meddlesome woman, she nonetheless had some artistic aspirations.  Her total lack of political acumen and her endless intriguing led to her downfall.

Nell Gwyn's Jewelry

Nell Gwyn (1650 -1687) was King Charles II (1630-1685) of England's best loved and renowned mistress. A lovely and talented comic actress, she was also generous and famously witty. Unlike the other mistresses, Nell loved Charles for himself and not because he was king.

Queen Jane Seymour's Jewels

Jane Seymour (c.1508-1537) was the third of Henry VIII of England's (1491-1547) six wives.  She is the least known and least documented of all his queens.

Yet this quiet, outwardly unassuming woman earned Henry's undying love simply because she was the only one to bear him a male heir.

Just when her position became secure, she tragically died due to complications following childbirth.

The Making of Princess Charlene of Monaco's Ocean Inspired Jewelry

The two royal brides this year both have impeccable taste but neither wore necklaces to their weddings.

But the newly minted Princess Charlene of Monaco  has a spectacular ocean inspired necklace and tiara commissioned for the occasion.

Both the Van Cleef and Arpels diamond and sapphire Ocean Spray necklace and the Lorenz Baumer Diamond Spray tiara designs were clearly influenced by Princess Charlene's love of the sea.  Not surprising as she is a former Olympic swimmer. Her preference for contemporary styles is also evident especially for the asymmetrical tiara.

Princess Charlotte of Wales and Memento Mori Jewelry

Princess Charlotte of Wales (1796 - 1817) was second in line to the British throne after her father, George the Prince of Wales (the future King George IV). But she died suddenly at 21 while he was still Regent standing in for his father,  mad King George III.

Her untimely death changed the course of history. Had she lived, there would have been no Queen Victoria, no Victorian age, no Abdication Crisis, no Queen Elizabeth II and no Prince William for Kate Middleton to marry.

Next Friday, much of the world will be glued to their television sets as they watch the wedding of Prince William and his new Princess. So here are some wedding inspired tutorials to celebrate the event!

One outstanding tutorial is Fancy Pants Weddings' how to design a brooch bouquet. It's relatively easy to wire all sorts of brooches together.  The project needs a lot of brooches so it's a good "something old" idea to raid grandma's collection!

Bejeweled Crowning Glories for Weddings Or Which Tiara will Kate Middleton Wear?

Tiaras are by far the most glorious head pieces for brides. But not all brides are into the princess look. I especially loved British artisan and instructor, Angela Smith's alternative to a tiara - this lovely bead and Swarovski crystal fascinator. It's such a unique design for special occasions.

Queen Isabella of Castile's Jewels

When Isabella of Castile and Leon (1451- 1504) was born, no one ever imagined this princess would grow up not only to inherit the throne but became Spain's most accomplished Queen ever. Her marriage to Ferdinand of Aragon unified Spain. Together this remarkable couple turned a backwater nation into a world power.

Known as Isabel la Católica (Isabella the Catholic) for her devotion to her faith, both Isabella and Ferdinand (the "Catholic Monarchs") attempted to also unify Spain under one religion. This lead to the cruel oppression and later expulsion of the Moors and Jews - the infamous Spanish Inquisition tarnished their reputations. Isabella was also the queen who helped bankroll Christopher Columbus' voyages.

Amazing Imperial Chinese Robes and Accessories Exhibition at the V&A

Emperor’s winter robe

Victoria and Albert Museum
The Victoria and Albert Museum of Design in London has an amazing exhibition on Imperial Chinese Robes  on right now until February 27, 2011. It's like the emperor's old clothes only better.

Lucky visitors get to see the splendor of the Manchu Imperial court dress, shoes and bejeweled hats. The Manchu or Qing dynasty (1644 -1912) was the last to rule China until the revolution in 1912 got rid of the final boy emperor.

Princess Diana's Engagement Ring Fuels Demands for Copies

It really didn't take long. Just hours after the news broke about Prince William and Kate Middleton's long awaited engagement, jewelers started getting calls from well-heeled women for copies of THE sapphire and diamond ring.

REFILE - A pair of photographs show Kate Middleton (L), fiance of Britain's Prince William posing in London November 16, 2010 and William's mother Diana, Princess of Wales, wearing the same engagment ring in London in an August 28, 1996 file photo. Britain's Prince William is to marry his long-term girlfriend Kate Middleton next year, after an on-off courtship lasting nearly a decade, bringing months of speculation about his intentions to an end.
