The US de minimus was abruptly removed about 1.5 months ago. After August 26, US consumers making small international orders of less than US$800 would have to pay tariffs otherwise known as an import sales taxes.

To say it has been a chaotic time for all is putting it mildly. There was no tariff collection program readily in place on the US border. So postal systems in dozens of countries around the world were forced to suspend shipments for some time. I also halted shipments to the US to avoid the initial problems at the border.

It's taken a while for small businesses, shipping companies, post offices and US customs to sort things out. That includes myself.

As I am a producer of handmade jewelry (CraftaGems) as well as my own laser cut wood products on beadinggem, I have now submitted and obtained my CUSMA (the US, Canada and Mexico free trade agreement is also known as USMCA; it replaced the original NAFTA agreement in 2020) certification through my shipping company, ChitChats. This means, my goods can now be shipped to US customers, tariff- free.

Figuring out the HTS codes which are used to classify international import and export codes was the "adventure" I could do without. Fortunately, Chitchats has streamlined their shipping processes since which makes it possible to resume shipments.

There is however, a slight increase in the shipping fee to cover the customs processing and brokerage fees for my CUSMA compliant products which Chitchats have managed to keep low.

I also have products in my shop which were produced in the US like the Tierracast findings and craft books. These have no tariffs.  Likewise, my digital products are also tariff-free.

Other products in my shop manufactured outside the US and Canada will be subject to tariffs - I haven't yet made them available for sale to US buyers.

The situation is constantly shifting, that's for sure. Stay tuned.
