Hello! I am Pearl
I
call myself the Beading Gem because of my given name, Pearl (really!)
and because I love beading and jewelry making in general. So much so in early 2005, I
started my own small business teaching the craft.
That soon led to another "facet" of the Beading Gem. Since 2007, The Beading Gem's Journal is
the place for all those stories I never get to tell, melding all my
passions together - writing, reading,crafts, history, photography and
science. A more recent passion is laser cutting!
I retired from my scientific job in 2012 and now blog full time in Canada to a worldwide audience.
I
also write about the many free and paid tutorials by other artisans and
contributed some of my own. I love telling readers about all the wonderful and inspiring creators I stumbled upon. They mark the many things I have learned
along my journey as a jewelry artisan and wish to share and inspire
others.

ReplyDeleteHi pearl, I was wanting to let you know that I was having some trouble with my kindle when I was attempting to post to the blog about the the gift certificate and using mixed media in projects. I want to apologize if I sent more the one of each post. I really wanted the longer or of two posted, the shorter one is a quickie of the other so if that shorter is the only one then that is ok too. I apologize for any inconveniences I may have caused.

ReplyDeleteHi, Pearl, I got a kick out of your comments about your name, so I thought I would share with you that I have an aunt named Jewell and I always thought it was a beautiful name. She was my grandmother's half-sister. The other half-sister was Leona, which is also lovely, and my grandmother was Mildred, which she hated all of her life. I think Pearl is an exceptional name, and in fact I used it for my white cat. :-)
ReplyDeleteIs there any way to persuade people not to use religious images in their jewellery. While they may have no qualms about giving offence, people whose religion those images belong to would be offended at seeing their most reverent images reduced to tawdry items. They could well be very polite and not want to offend the person who made the jewellery - who ofcourse has no such morals.
ReplyDeleteI don't know if that is possible. My take though is that the people who make religious jewelry are themselves religious so it appeals to them. In short, jewelry makers make things they like themselves.
ReplyDeleteThose who sell such jewelry are probably target marketing those who might appreciate them.
I think one of the most offensive things tourists can do in other parts of the world is to walk into a place of worship dressing and behaving inappropriately - something that they would never do in a church back home.

ReplyDeleteIt's nice to put a face to the name. I so enjoy your blog. I have a blog I started quite some time ago, but never kept up with it. If you remember, I am the captain of the EBEG. It is a guild, or group of international bead embroidery artists. I do wish there was a local bead society that I could attend once in a while. I will have to look around and see if I can find one. After all, I do live in a large metro area. (Kansas City) Thank you for all your hard work!

DeletePearl, I STILL have a slight panic if I don’t see your newsletter in my mail. I love them and I read them many times. About a month ago I was asked a question about jewelry photography and I had to tell them all about you and your class. Unfortunately, they deleted me from their page on Facebook. That’s fine, I tried to answer the ladies question and I don’t care if they want to put my name in all CAPS, announcing that I am not on that site anymore. I do care if I don’t get your Blog.
