Paper Wonders

Most of us probably made paper beads as a craft at some point in our lives. It's a great way to recycle paper. But I hadn't realised how gorgeous they could be when they are coupled with seed beads in African beading styles.

I recently came across Mzuri Beads, an ethical trading and cooperative business based in Uganda where the women get to earn fair pay making paper beads and jewelry. The business was established in 2006 by British born Kirstie MacLean who met the beaders when she was volunteering in that country. Today Mzuri Beads export their eco products worldwide. Note that Mzuri Beads are well varnished and can withstand quite a dunking in water.

As you can see the beads are colorful and beautifully made using recycled magazines. Mzuri Beads even wrote up a tutorial on how to make paper beads if you've forgotten how! Here's a picture of the artisans themselves and a sampling of what they make :
