For the second straight year, many of the A-listers who attended the Academy Awards wore no necklaces. But they did sparkle in other ways especially their ears and their hair. Diamonds were hugely popular.
My favorites of all the red carpet jewelry were the real historical pieces from Fred Leighton - who specialize in gorgeous vintage jewelry. British actress Carey Mulligan, the Best Actress nominee had the evening's most stunning earrings -a spectacular 19th century cascading diamond earrings which only recently came into the Fred Leighton collection.
Presenter Elizabeth Banks also wore a vintage Fred Leighton - an understated diamond headband.
Zoe Kravitz sported a Fred Leighton 19th century diamond wing brooch in her hair. I wish there was a closer shot available but it's an interesting way to wear a brooch.
Julianne Moore wore 2 diamond and platinum Bulgari (circa 1930) - from their historical archives collection:
Sarah Jessica Parker wore 19th century diamond cluster earrings proving some jewelry designs are forever popular :
Maggie Gyllenhaal's bracelet is a Fred Leighton 1940's diamond cluster statement bracelet. Not sure if that is an emerald gemstone or not.
Mariska Hargitay's stunning Fred Leighton diamond necklace is also from the 19th century:
Jennifer Lopez's diamond ear clips are vintage Cartier (1934, London).
Meryl Streep wore a magnificent Fred Leighton Art Deco diamond and oynx bracelet teamed with a silver purse.
It's not historical but Mariah Carey's huge diamond brooch was another stand out because brooches are not that popular these days. Bodice brooches hark back to previous centuries. She certainly made use of the dress design to place it.
Update: A reader wanted to see a closeup of Kate Winslet's $2.5 million dollar platinum and white and yellow diamond necklace. So this one is for you, Marsha!
This necklace is Art deco inspired and based on jewels in the Tiffany archives. Those are rare fancy yellow diamonds.

Gorgeous pieces...I don't always wear a necklace either. I always wear at least two bracelets and earrings so I sometimes feel a necklace would be too much!! :0)
ReplyDeleteCan't go wrong with diamonds...
