Team Mongolia Wows with their Stunning Embroidered Uniforms for the Paris Olympics
The Opening Ceremonies of the Paris Olympics is scheduled for this Friday. But as far as Olympic team uniform designs are concerned, Mongolia has already won gold on the internet. Their exquisitely designed attire for Friday's event stands out for style and superb workmanship so unlike other "sporty" looks from other countries.

AI or Artificial Intelligence has been in the news a lot in recent months. AI is a sophisticated software tool which can been trained to do specific jobs. It's actually not new. Advanced web search engines such as Google Search, the recommendations generated by Amazon Search, Youtube, Netflix including human voice recognition services like Alexa and Siri are just a few of the AI examples we already use everyday.
AI, just like the Internet, is technology that have and will continue to affect and change our lives. On the plus side, new AI tools can potentially be used by scientists and doctors to for example, pinpoint the genetic mutations which can cause disease. New AI continues to be developed like Norton's Genie, a free tool which is designed to help spot online scams. Here is PCMag's review on its pros and cons.

Why Large South Sea Pearls are So Expensive
Long ago, natural pearls were very expensive as these were accidental finds. Finding matching natural pearls might take decades! A necklace worth would cost a vast fortune. But thanks to more than a century of successful pearl culturing, this gemstone is accessible to ordinary folks like us. Yet there are cultured pearls today which can fetch high prices.
These are the large South Sea pearls. These are usually cultured in a large species of saltwater oysters (Pinctada maxima ) - they can grow up to 12 inches across. They have to be large enough to accept big bead nuclei. A round bead nucleus is the foundation where the oysters deposit layer after layer of pearl nacre in response to what the animal perceives as an irritant.

Why This Craft Hack is Killing Crafters
The fall and winter months are typically when people do more crafts. We all love checking out social media like Youtube, TikTok and so on for inspiration and instructions on how to do it yourself. There is one craft hack, though, which should be totally avoided because it has killed dozens of people, if not more, in the US alone. Those who survive are maimed for life.
Fractal or Lichtenberg burning, also sometimes known as wood fracking, uses high voltage electricity - much higher than normal mains electricity - to create a lightning or Lichtenberg effect on wood. Cool to see but very dangerous as the slightest contact with the equipment will deliver a potentially fatal current through the body. One report cites the fatality rate at 71% - much higher than the 5-15% fatality rate of other high voltage incidents.

Swarovski and Alternative Crystals Comparisons | Buying Swarovski Crystals in the Future | Brand Control Agreement
Many jewelry makers are still reeling from the large scale, but not, complete withdrawal of Swarvoski from the DIY marketplace. My original post written almost a year ago - Is Swarovski Going to Stop Making Crystal Beads? What are the Alternatives? - is still strongly trending on Google searches.
I am not surprised as the loss of these finely made crystals is a big blow to a lot of us.

The suggested projects when I introduced my original laser cut shadow box/bezel pendant styles were those which 1) had glued on small objects and 2) sea glass and shells embedded in a thin glue - which can also be substituted with resin with the right precautions.
But the creative souls who read my blog or found my shop on Etsy definitely saw possibilities beyond my humble projects. One, Amber Allen kindly let me share pictures of her creations - lovely pressed flower and leaf designs.

Gillian Genser is a Toronto artist who works with natural materials like bones, shells, dried plant material and egg shells. But she was unknowingly slowly poisoning herself with her art. She had worked for several years on a sculpture of Adam using mussel shells. She spent hours, day after day, grinding up mussel shells. She did not use protection and breathed in all the dust. She later found years of fine dust accumulation in her house ventilation system.
Gillian wrote in this Toronto Life article, "After a few months working on Adam, I began to feel unwell. I was agitated all of the time. I had constant headaches, and I vomited often, sometimes a few times a day. I visited a never-ending assortment of specialists—neurologists, rheumatologists, endocrinologists—hoping to figure out what was wrong with me. When they asked me if I worked with anything toxic, I said no, that I only used natural materials."

The Ring Finders : Metal Detectorists to the Rescue!
Rings are so easily lost for many reasons. Some people never get round to resizing them. Our fingers fluctuate in size during the same day and rings can slip away without our knowledge. One woman in Arizona lost her wedding ring last week when she accidentally gave it away with the Halloween candy! Just the other day, I had not noticed one of my rings had come off but it was safely still in the gardening glove finger when I put the glove on again! But people might not be so lucky if they dropped it at the beach /lake or anywhere in the great outdoors.

Just How Much Copper does a Mine Produce?
We take the materials we use without a second thought. Take copper for instance. Not only do many of us love using copper for jewelry, this important metal has many industrial and biomedical uses (see first link below). South African photographer, Dillon Marsh, has an excellent combination photo series called For What It's Worth which helps us visualize the output of copper from mines and the captures the environmental changes wrought by mining practices.

Jewelry from Amazon`s New 3D Printed Marketplace
It`s been 4 years since I wrote about one of the first 3D printed jewelry designers to use the new technology. More and more designers are now gravitating to the field as costs are dropping and the equipment becomes more widespread. This is one of the reasons why Etsy had to change their policies not so long ago as `handmade` had to be redefined to include them. These designers are still using their heads, hearts and hands but their hands are now on computer keyboards.

Swarovski Crystals Sparkle in Skyfall's Severine's Spectacular Dress
I don't usually care much for the testosterone laden James Bond movie franchise. But I will be making an exception for the upcoming movie, Skyfall, for several reasons.
