Cords, ribbons and trims that we typically find in the fabric store are often wonderful alternatives to metal in jewelry designs. They add color, texture and are comfortable against the skin. These materials are certainly less cold to the touch than metal!

The latest book I just received for review came at the right time given that I've been making more cord jewelry lately. Bohemian-Inspired Jewelry: 50 Designs Using Leather, Ribbon, and Cords is a large collection of designs by several people led by Lorelei Eurto and Erin Seigel.

They sure use a large range of cords, ribbons, trims and embroidery floss for their wonderfully unconventional jewelry designs. I didn't realize until I went through their ribbons and cords guide section that there was something called leather lace.

The authors also included a page on how to care for silk based jewelry. The lovely Nouvelle necklace by Denise Moore below shows a beautiful combination of sari silk with round faceted agate beads.

Also helpful is their chapter on tools. Yes, Fray Check rules when you're dealing with potential fraying! I also liked their suggestion of having a macrame board and t-pins for knotting and braiding.

What I particularly liked were some of the innovative uses of cord.  The Triple Loop earrings shown on the top right of the book shows you can use plenty of cord for earrings.

Another of my favorites was Mary Dodd's Awakening Lotus bracelet which had an unusual asymmetric cord section doubling up as the button loop.

Elegant comfort was certainly expressed with the ribbon lariats.  I loved the Afternoon Tea silk ribbon necklace with wire and bead accents.

Definitely a fun and inspiring book for the Bohemian in you!
