Maybe you have double holed diamond shaped gemstones in your stash? I know I do. So I was really pleased to come across this wire wrapping tutorial by Brenda Sigafoos over on Wire Sculpture. She called it the Lady Luck ring.
It is an open design with banding on the shank portion. As you can see, gemstone is held with wrapped wire at four places. I think other double holed shapes will work too although the frame portion will have to be tweaked a bit for say rectangles.
