Wire woven jewelry is both beautiful to look at as well as satisfying to do. This is a cold connection technique to join wires and other components without having to use the torch. The repetitive motion just like knitting, crochet and other crafts, is soothing. So I am not surprised when readers respond positively to anything wire woven.
One of the best wire weavers out there has to be Sarah Thompson. Simply outstanding designs as you can see from this feature designer post I wrote about her work. I recently received her book Fine Art Wire Weaving: Weaving Techniques for Stunning Jewelry Designs
for review. The publisher is Interweave|F+W. The book contains very different designs from Sarah‘s Wire Weaving Bracelets: Basics and Beyond Craftsy class which I reviewed before.
The 17 project book is filled with gorgeous and innovative ring, bracelet and necklace designs. The projects are divided into skill levels - beginner, intermediate and advanced. The beginner level refers to wire weaving novices, not a wire neophyte. Some wire experience is needed to tackle the projects in this book. For example the Baroque Pearl Pendant design below is rated at the beginner level.
The technique section at the beginning is thorough as the designer covers the types of weaving, how to shape the wire and shares tips like how to keep the wire from tangling and kinking. She teaches how to make different kinds of ear wires and clasps. One of the most stunning clasps I have ever seen is shown in the advanced Kayla pendant necklace design (see last design below).
The detailed instructions are nicely balanced with photos as well as text.
Many of the designs do not need a butane micro torch. But she does have some torch balled wire designs like the beginner Embrace adjustable ring and the Orbit ring designs. Sarah is one designer who does patinate fine silver. She prefers fine silver and copper for wire weaving and explains why she doesn`t like other metals like sterling silver in her Techniques section.
Her earring designs are simply divine. Original and one of a kind!
It was very difficult to select favorites from all her outstanding designs! Her mastery in layering and shaping woven wire is unique. Add in her superb teaching skills, this book is a must have for any serious wire artist wannabee. Highly recommended.
