Leaf elements are wonderful for jewelry designs. Want to make your own metal leaf in any size you want? James Miller over on Ganoskin shows how to make a metal leaf from sheet metal. His tutorial is largely a pictorial. He shares pictures of the different kinds of tools and how he used them.
The designer probably used a jewelry saw to cut out the leaf shape. Metal shears are easy to use too. In either case, the edges have to be cleaned up with sanding.
He has a large ingot like anvil - I wonder where he got it from? Notice that he uses different tools to planish (flatten) the leaf shape. Basically, this how-to is all about careful shaping.

You're question - where did he get it from - is a good one.
ReplyDeleteGood anvils these days are more often new than used unless you know what you are doing when you are in the market for one.
That being said - here in Canada you can try Princess Auto - Canadian Tire - welding shops - farrier suppliers have anvils - or even ebay. However shipping an anvil is going to be costly as they weigh quite a bit. Depending on where you live you might be able to find a blacksmith still in the area....
I think a good jeweler's steel block would probably do the same thing as what is shown and is easier to store away then a huge anvil sitting on your bench. :0)
Thanks for your useful insight!!
