Long time readers will remember my feature on Odile Gova Desgroseilliers (Woolly Fabulous). She makes incredible felt and zipper brooches from recycled wool sweaters. While Odile clearly has her own unique way of putting together her work, here is a tutorial with a simple way of creating a felt and zipper butterfly brooch. The designer is Liza Fetrovna.
She used a very stiff felt for the base. After removing most of the zipper cloth, she sewed the strips of zipper teeth together and on the felt.
I would consider using thicker felt and edging with the zipper teeth strips rather than applying right on top as in the tutorial. What do you think?

What about using leather or ultrasuede instead of heavy felt?

DeleteAlthough bear in mind, sewing through leather and suede will not be as easy as through felt!
DeleteA three sided needle is used for sewing leather and suede. It makes the work much easier.
ReplyDeleteI certainly saw an increase in zipper fashion this past year at the Christmas sales. It seems to be trending right now.
