Most of the cabochon wire work I've seen usually involve large cabochons. It's much easier to handle the bigger ones than fumbling with a small cabochon. If you are up to the challenge, try this encased wire bezel pendant tutorial by The Bellanoche Workshop. The designer and instructor used 18 G wire to make both the back and front frames as well as the central hoop and bail. 26 G wire is used to wrap the two halves and frame together.
Soft temper wire like copper will make it easier to work with despite the gauge. Otherwise work slowly!
The tutorial is in Spanish. But you don't need to know the language to follow the tutorial.
