Vietnamese wire artist, Lan Anh created this lovely double star tutorial as a pendant.  She starts with an 18 G wire star frame. The cabochon is wire wrapped to the frame using double wire.  I like her thinking.  If you have to trap the cabochon with wire lengths, why not do so in a star shape!

This design is versatile. Consider making it larger as a Christmas ornament.  The cabochon need not be a gemstone.  A glass, resin or polymer clay cabochon will work too!
