I have used cord for both ordinary kumihimo and beaded kumihimo. But I never really considered ribbon until I saw British designer,  Pru McRae's tutorial on how to make a ribbon kumihimo bracelet.

The resulting finish is different from cord work.  Especially if you use some of the lovely ribbons available today.  The Japanese ones come to mind.

Pru demonstrates with light grosgrain ribbon.  She says you can use thicker ribbon but if that is too bulky, then use a combination of ribbon and cord.

She has a very important tip. New discs should be used for beaded kumihimo as the fresh foam material will grip the thin cord best.  Older discs should be used for thicker ribbon.
