We live at a time when many cultural traditions are under threat of extinction. Irina of UAmaze is determined to keep her Ukrainian heritage alive through her beautiful hand painted art work, home decor and accessories.
She said, "I sincerely believe that we are responsible for saving the traditions of our country."
One lucky winner of this giveaway will receive a jewelry set (shown above) with her modern interpretation of the traditional Ukrainian decorative painting style called Petrykivka. The distinctive floral patterns and broad brush strokes were originally used to decorate the houses in a Ukrainian village of the same name.
Petrykivka painting is now on UNESCO's list of "Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity." It and the Samchykivska painting, which according to Irina, has almost disappeared in Ukraine, are the two styles she incorporates in her work.
I received a blue floral pendant like, but not quite the same as this one below, in her store. As they are hand painted, no two designs are exactly the same. Note that her leather cords are not finished with findings but are meant to be tied at the back.
Take a look at her store and you will see not just jewelry but beautiful scarves, hand painted decor and wall art. I included her gorgeously painted Christmas ornament.
Italian Silk Scarves designed using a Samchykivka folk art technique |
Irina is rightly proud of her rich heritage. I agree with her - when you purchase a design, you will indeed contribute to the future of folk art in the Ukraine.
The Ukrainian culture and talent of its people are incredibly diverse. Last year I was lucky enough to catch a performance of one of their ballet dance troupes, The National Ballet of Odessa, when they performed in Kitchener, Ontario.
Have a look at this rehearsal of traditional Ukraininan folk dancing performed by men. Many of these dances originated from rural Cossack villages.
