Not to long ago, a reader was looking on how to make word or text beads. She stumbled upon a very old post of mine and found that the links were no longer valid. A perennial problem with long running blogs like mine!
So I did a little digging to find more up to date ones. Here are a couple. The first is this tutorial which is made from scrap fabric, paper, beads glue and wire.
The instructor is Pennsylvania based Jeri of RecycledParts4Art on Youtube is a dedicated crafter, mixed media artist and lover of all things vintage. She also has an Etsy store, RecycledParts4Art.
The second tutorial uses air dry clay which doesn't need an oven to cure. The instructor is Renee of WannaScrap? on Youtube doesn't actually make beads but rectangular charms. You will have to make the tiles thick enough so you can run a wire - say 18G - through the middle of each tile to create a bead hole. The letters are handwritten and the tile sealed. You can use resin ( like Little Window's Brilliant Resin - use BG1516 for 15% off) or a craft sealant like Mod Podge.
Metalsmiths can hop over to Kate Richbourg's copper word bead tutorial over on ClothPaperScissors.
The Power of Words
Words are so powerful - they can hurt, humiliate, hinder yet heal, help and bring hope. Here are some of my favorite quotations.
"You can stroke people with words."
F. Scott Fitzgerald
"By words the mind is winged."
Aristophanes
"Words are of course, the most powerful drug used by mankind."
Rudyard Kipling
"Uttering a word is like striking a note on the keyboard of imagination."
Ludwig Wittgenstein

Rudyard Kipling
"Uttering a word is like striking a note on the keyboard of imagination."
Ludwig Wittgenstein
"Because even the smallest of words can be the ones who hurt you, or save you."
Natsuki Takaya
"In three words I can sum up everything I have learned about life : it goes on."
Robert Frost
"All human wisdom is summed up in two words : wait and hope."

ReplyDeleteI remember seeing beads with words ages ago on your blog. I remember trying to decoupage words on fabric and paper beads but I did not like how mod podge made the fabric look tacky. Maybe, the mediums suggested by Jeri will work better. Thanks for sharing. It is indeed a tough job to sort through broken links and correct them.
