British micro crochet jewelry designer, Steffi Glaves, sure is inspirational. I wrote about her wonderful work and tutorials here. She definitely inspired New Zealander, Jemima of CupofCoffeeCrochetNZ!
As her shop name suggests, she crochets in her spare time. She is crafting her way through architecture school! Shown here are her tiny little works in all their colorful splendor. My favorites are her sunflowers and miniature granny square earrings.
Jemima has managed to find the time to start her Youtube channel. This is where I came across her because she shared in a thorough tutorial exactly how to make super tiny granny square earrings. She includes her tips and tricks and materials - especially what kind of thread to use. The written pattern is in the video description.
It is a long tutorial because she is careful about showing exactly how to crochet something so small. Tight tension is necessary but at the same time, you shouldn't be cutting off circulation in your fingers!
Thanks to Jemima's video, I might try this myself. Hats off to doing such a clear video. It is not easy to show the detail while filming and working at the same time.
You can see more of her work on her Instagram.

I love these crochet earrings! So talented.
ReplyDeleteI have actually managed to figure out how to crochet (after more than 20 years of trying) but not sure how good I would be at doing it with anything less than worsted weight yarn...
ReplyDeleteSomething to consider for the future, though. I already have a lot of the really small hooks.
I too was a late crochet starter as I was a knitter first. But once I got into it, I now prefer it. Like beads, thin thread doesn't take up much space!
DeleteI'm sentimental about granny squares, watching my mom and my, well..my granny, make so many beautiful combos. I do love those sunflowers too!
ReplyDeleteVery whimsical Thank you Pearl.
ReplyDeleteI learned to crochet by watching my wife, her mother, and her grandmother crochet. But they weren't interested in stopping long enough to teach me, so once again, I had to teach myself. I've always enjoyed it, but let's face it, you can only make so many blankets. This is going to be my "go-to" relaxation project when I tire of beading. And it gives me the opportunity to combine this with my other jewelry projects. I'm always looking for different projects to keep from getting bored. You've done it again, Pearl. Thanks
ReplyDeleteIt's good to change up techniques so we don't get bored. Another reason to learn a new technique is to avoid repetitive strain injuries. I could not do wire work or chain mail projects too long as my wrists and fingers hurt after a while!
