“The world is a book and those who do not travel read only one page.” So said Augustine of Hippo (St Augustine) who lived from 354-430 CE. I totally agree with him. Being able to travel is not just about the adventure but the broadening of minds.

Let's take a look at some awesome world map jewelry and charms to celebrate Earth Day which is today.

First up is the world map locket necklace, shown above, by Eilidh Strang's studio, SilkPurseSowsEar in Edinburgh, Scotland.  A real beauty which can be personalized!

The design below from Turkish artisan, Gül, of DEFJEWELRYSTORE,  is the perfect gift for a globetrotter!

These gold enamel world map charms are so lovely!  They are available from Jessica in Texas - Goldjewelrysupplier

It's astonishing how small this engraved map is on this dainty world map ring!  The designer is Pamela of PameFineJewelryShop, in Hong Kong.

I am still sad that Tierracast is no more. They made such amazing high quality charms. Many vendors are still carrying their products - while they last. Their map charms such as these from nottoto in Massachusetts are beautiful!

This turquoise earth necklace has gold grid lines!  It's from Jess in Michigan of ConstantBaubling

BeadsHappen in Ohio has the most unusual 20 mm bead - a globe for sure!  It will make for an equally unusual pendant! Ohio

Why the World Map is Wrong

The statement "why the world map is wrong" only applies to flat maps of the world. That is because the only way to make something round into something flat is to distort some of it.

The flat world maps we typically see today have land masses nearer the equator shrink while those nearer the poles enlarge. This is the Mercator map projection which was originally presented by Flemish geographer and cartographer Gerardus Mercator, in 1569.

There have been other types of maps which try and correct the distortion (and the unintended consequences) as you can see in this Ted Talk video.
