Shipping Update for Physical Products to the US from My Etsy Stores

Unfortunately, from August 22, 2025, my business will not be able to ship physical products across the border to my valued customers in the United States. This saddens me. It is the result of increased prices specifically to US customers with the extension of tariffs and duties to small items coming from abroad, and the extra documentation needed to comply. I'll try to explain the details below for those who are interested.

This covers both my supplies shop, beadinggem.etsy.com and my finished crafts shop, craftagems.etsy.com. The last day to order physical products for those of you in the United States (only) will be Wednesday, August 20, 2025. Again - the change only applies to customers in the US. Edit : I also cannot currently ship any Chinese made products - see item descriptions.

Show and Tell : Custom Book Club Decoupage Earrings!

I enjoy making decoupage laser cut wood jewelry using origami paper so much so I shared the tutorials on how to make them. One tutorial is for using laser cut wood blanks. The other makes use of a laser cutter to speed up this process.

I had put some of those designs for sale on my CraftaGems shop and sold some. Then came along, Kari who asked if I could do a custom order for her book club members. What a fantastic memento! So I naturally said yes.

What You Need to Know about Tariffs and the De Minimis for Selling, Buying and Shipping on Etsy

I know many of you read my blog because you enjoy reading and learning about jewelry making and other crafts. But sometimes some of you find it a refuge from what's going on in the world right now. But this post is necessary as some of us are producers, or work for one, and all of us are consumers. Tariffs affect us all.

What are Tariffs ?
Tariffs are protectionist trade policies to deter people from buying imported goods. It is, in other words, an import sales tax. Any tariffs imposed by the US on other countries will be paid by US companies and consumers.

Winter Store Wide Sale | Late Shipping Discount Deal

Many of you might remember my last major sale in exchange for late shipping. This was to avoid having to shut down my Etsy stores, for supplies (beadinggem) and finished crafts (CraftaGems), while I am on a longer (more than a few days) vacation.

As I explained before, this method means my shops' traffic does not get hit by Etsy's algorithm as my shops will continue to actively invite views and sales. It takes a while for traffic to recover when shops reopen after "on vacation" periods.

CANADA POST STRIKE UPDATE | Switching to ChitChats for Canadian Orders

My shops, beadinggem (supplies) and CraftaGems will remain open for all American AND Canadian orders during this crucial holiday shopping season. However, Canadian shoppers are now impacted with the Canada Postal workers strike. Snail mail within Canada has been halted.

I have therefore switched to ChitChats for Canadian orders for the first time. I have been using ChitChats successfully for US orders for a number of years and this will continue.

Huge Late Shipping Sale on my Etsy | Etsy's Vacation Mode Affects Traffic | Funny AirPlane Safety Check

I dislike putting my Etsy shops in vacation mode for much needed breaks, having done so before. That's because if shops are closed for an extended time, like a month, the traffic takes a while to come back as no one has been visiting or buying from the shops. Etsy's algorithm reacts to (lack of) activity signals.

If it is just a few days that I am away, I just extend my processing time by a few more days and let buyers know. This time I am going to be away off and on for a whole month - from roughly mid - August to mid September. I will be around in the first week of September.

So I have decided to run a special large late shipping sale of physical items during much of this period as an incentive to expect a slightly more than 2 week (about 12 business days) processing time at the longest.

Etsy's Big CrackDown | What to Do if Your Listing is Deactivated | AI Generated Crochet Patterns

Etsy is a huge handmade marketplace and properly policing it has been a issue for many years. That's not surprising as the volume of both buyers and sellers is very large, many tens of millions compared to Etsy's staff numbers. See my past post, Things Beginners Need to  Know about Selling on Etsy for more details. Etsy just can't cope.

In the last couple of years, Etsy has been ramping up the use of bots to do the policing. While the bots are useful to some degree, they cannot replace human oversight. False positives do occur much to the consternation of legitimate sellers.

Lovely Wood Jewelry by Inspired Designers using Beadinggem's Laser Cut Wood !

When I first started laser cutting wood for jewelry making and providing the cuts and cutting files for others to use in my beadinggem Etsy store, I had some ideas of my own. But nothing prepared me for the amazing creativity and artistic talent among the many who have bought said wood cuts.

So here is a homage to these creative souls who took the time and effort to share the results of their endeavors in the review section of my shop. Some but not all, have shops and social media presences, so I have included the links when possible.

Easy Decoupage Wood Earrings Tutorial | My First Voiced Tutorial

It's been a while since I last wrote about decoupage wood jewelry - see this past post, Easy Decoupage Pendant Tutorial Using Rectangular and Other Wood Shapes. This time around, I wanted to demonstrate how to use furniture repair markers together with Mod Podge and origami paper for earrings. Easy peasy but note, there is one other way to make it even easier - and that is with a laser cutter. I will leave that for another time.

I find that tear-drop wood blanks tend to be rather large so this mini-tutorial also shows how the same technique can be used for small teardrop earrings. The small blanks are available here.

Things Beginners Need to Know about Selling on Etsy

A long time reader, Marlene Hoffman of Amira's Jewelry Design, recently wrote to let me know that "after several years of creating jewelry and attempting to sell at fairs and markets, I'm thinking of starting an Etsy shop. Do you have any words of wisdom to share about selling through Etsy?" Thanks Marlene for inspiring this post!

I really get what she said. I tried the craft show route myself, mostly with my jewelry making friends, over the years. I find it exhausting and time consuming to prep up inventory and set up the booth. Having enough inventory was also an issue. I often didn't have enough items for a table - hence teaming up with friends which also allowed us to share the table fee. Lately though, craft show fees have become prohibitively expensive. The ones with affordable fees just didn't have the traffic so the return is poor.

Shadow Box Style Wood Diffuser Pendants for Essential Oils

People do use unsealed and thus porous polymer clay, lava beads and wood as a diffuser material for essential oils. Some of you may remember my little test on a simple elasticated lava and gemstone bracelet  I made. The scent lasted several days if you added more than one drop onto each lava bead.

I wondered if there was a way of making the scent last longer on wood?

Wire Wrapped Skeleton Pendant Tutorial | My New Skull Earrings for Halloween

It's that ghoulish time of year again!  This time, unlike last year, Halloween celebrations are going ahead, at least where I live.  I'm all ready to go with candy for the children.

Need a quick project?  Check out Gloria Uhler's (Domestic - Divaonline) latest tutorial. It is for a wire wrapped skeleton - you do not have to be a wire wrapping expert for this one. I just love how she used a diamond duo bead for the pelvic bone!  This is a first as far as I know.

How to Make Complex Real Flower Resin Cabochons and Pendants | Plant Suggestions

I knew early on I would never enjoy field work so I never did any in my entire scientific career - samples always came to the laboratory for analysis!  That's because the mandatory one week ecological field trip I endured in the UK during my first year at university was definitely not my cup of tea.

Imagine this tropical island- bred, international student, crouched miserably on a wet British spring day trying to count the tiny barnacles within a grid on a seaside rock. Or the terrible case of hay fever after a day on the marram grass covered sand dunes. Or the hours spent in a damp woodland looking for the elusive and very small British bee orchid.

Trendy Geometric Earrings Tutorial Uses Wood, Metal and Polymer Clay

I am always amazed at Gloria Uhler's creativity. She is the crafter behind Domestic-DivaOnline with tons of unique tutorials not just for jewelry. Being able to think outside the box is what makes her designs stand out.

Take her recent trendy geometric earrings tutorial for example. The design is actually a composite of my offset triangle wood laser cuts, aluminum strips and polymer clay.

Trying Out Etsy's New Video Feature for Listings

As you know, I started a new finished jewelry and crafts store, CraftaGems earlier this year.  Like everyone else, I try to take good photos. However, I did have some concern with some of the items. Do my photos really show how shiny or sparkly some of the designs really are? After all, we want that little wow factor to turn a visit into a sale.

Lo and behold, Etsy launched their beta video function for listings - only 1 video per listing is allowed.  So I gave it a go and added short video clips (5-15 seconds) to some of the listings I felt needed it.    You can see the actual video as an image option when you click on any of the design links below.
