Ceramic and porcelain are both made from clay. However, porcelain is made from finer clay and is fired at higher temperatures. You know what? I adore them both as charms in jewelry making. Every artisan has a distinct style in how they make their charms. Here are some of my favourites.

The gorgeous ceramic fox pendant above is by a wonderful artisan, Majoyoal, whose work I have featured before.

Small charms like these starfish ones by Cinderellaroom are always popular because they are versatile!

The traditional Chinese blue and white colour palette is also a favourite of artisans like MadebyJessieLee. These are her botanical charms

Bees are also very popular. Lorrie and Rick of  BorealisAtelier offer their glazed porcelain bee pendants in different hues.

These tiny handmade bird and flower porcelain charms have gold accents. The maker is BitaJewells.

Aren't these ceramic charms adorable? They are from BeadsJoyStudio

Another lovely blue and white collection. These are handprinted by HelloMumiku

These flower and animal charms were cleverly sourced from broken chinaware. The creator is ArtistaJewelryC

How Ancient Egyptians Made Faience Amulets

Faience is an early form of ceramic - a tin glazed pottery - was invented somewhere in the Middle East before the 9th century CE. This was a major advance in pottery making which required high kiln temperatures of above 1000 degrees C.

6000 years ago, the Ancient Egyptians came up with a method of making Egyptian faience which is related more to glass than to ceramics as it is non clay based. They called it tjehenet.

Watch this Victoria and Albert Museum video which shows an artist and archaeologist, Zahed Taj-Eddin, demonstrate the technique of Ancient Egyptians used.
