Book Review & Giveaway : Mastering Peyote Stitch

Peyote stitch has to be the most versatile and often fastest stitch in the beading canon.  It lends itself very well to sculptural pieces. This likely explains its popularity. So there is no such thing as too many books on peyote, right?

I recently received Mastering Peyote Stitch: 15 Inspiring Projects  for review.  The book was published by Interweave. Melinda Barta not only edited the book but is also the editor of Beadwork magazine.   Fans of Beadwork magazine will recognize many of the designers featured in this book.

There are 15 projects in all.  The book clearly aims to take the reader beyond the basics of peyote stitch covering flat, circular and tubular variations. It's not only peyote but many of the projects include other stitches such as right angle weave (RAW), herringbone and bead embroidery.  The Basics section of the book is thorough with many tips including how to hold your work, how to zip up edges, correcting errors and so forth.

Buckle Up Cuff by Carole Ohl
The book is a delightful showcase of innovative beaded designs and shapes. The Buckle Up cuff is one example.  Other designs involved beaded beads, layered designs, floral elements and geometric shapes. Some designs teamed beadwork with chains or other beads.  Some of my favorites were the open beaded shapes such as the Geometry 101 bracelet as well as the wonderfully layered Urban Skyline design.

Big Sky Bracelets by Melinda Barta
The instructional images and diagrams for each project were clear.  The final project photographs though did not do justice to these beautiful and vibrant designs. But this issue should not deter beading enthusiasts who wish to move beyond simple peyote beadweaving.
