Maybe I am partial to making earrings. But I do believe making smaller items is a good way to learn a technique.  That way, one does not have to struggle with a much more complicated and larger project.  This lantern like macrame beaded bead earrings tutorial is a gem. It is by Yuna Titarenko (aka as Makramania) on livemaster.ru.

It's clever how the knotting starts around a jump ring at the top of the "lantern".  The different sized beads add color and shape to the project.

It is a wonderful change from making stitched beaded bead earrings, isn't it?

The tutorial is in Russian so you might like it translated although the pictures alone are very clear.
