One thing I have learned through years of teaching beginners that they are in need of not just instruction but inspiration. They are at the start of their jewelry making journey and do not have more than the basic skills. However, such is the beauty of this wonderful craft, that even with those few skills, they can still make stunning jewelry!
I recently received this book, Make It Sparkle: 25 Dazzling Jewelry Designs to Make Any Occasion Special from Interweave for review. The 25 designs in there are by Lindsay Burke as well as other contributors. Shown here are some of my favorites from the book.
All the designs are pretty and easy to do. There is one added advantage especially for the bib necklaces such as the Bejeweled necklace below and the one on the cover. They provide a lot of practice in making wire loops!
Rhinestone chain is very versatile. Wire wrapping the chain to a bangle as show in the Pink Party design, is just one way to use them. I liked her tip about adding a bit of glue to make sure the wire end stays put. A good idea with beginners who may not be able to properly flatten the wire end to the work.
Lindsay also had another design (not shown) where you use special prong ends with loops for clasps. The last rhinestone of the chain on either end is placed in the prong ends. The prongs are then closed over the crystal. The loops of these prong ends are for jump rings so you can connect them to clasps.
Beginners are also led carefully through every project. Even the bead order is given for the memory wire cuff design :
Absolute beginners will also appreciate the way the designers figured out crystal sizes as for the graduated earring dangles below. More confident beginners will be able to adapt the basic design and explore different color combinations.
The book showcases just wire and beading wire use. There is no beading involved.
A beautifully photographed book with simple but stunning designs. Best suited for beginners in need of inspiration and who adore bling. Lots and lots of bling. A great gift idea!
