Sherry Serafini is a renowned bead artist and instructor. Her spectacular work has been worn by celebrity entertainers such as Steve Tyler of Aerosmith, Melissa Etheridge, Lenny Kravitz and Fergie of Black Eye Peas. Body adornment meets art!
I received her latest book from Kalmbach Books for review. Inspired Bead Embroidery includes not just 16 gorgeous projects but gives insight into her design process. There are many inspirational examples in the Gallery section.
Bead embroidery often involves using cabochons and beads. This time, the designer focused on using all kinds of distinctive focals. One of my favorites was her seahorse necklace where she use a metal stamping and staying with the ocean theme, also included flat back sea shells. Her projects were balanced between neutral themes as well as some richly colored designs.
Her creativity is amazing as she can put together very different components in pleasing ways. She teamed up metal filigrees with Lucite flowers, pearls and crystals in these earrings below. Her designs often have a 3D element. The flowers are resting on beaded wooden rings.
Some of the designs demonstrated new ways to dress up gemstone donuts by filling the holes! She also filled in the holes of the bubble like metal components on the top sides of this necklace below.
Other distinctive designs include the mixed media bangles and a very unusual beaded belt buckle!
There were two spectacular beaded bags in the book. The black purse was a really clever way to dress up what was a satin bag the designer bought in Chinatown in New York City.
Her little beaded suede bag was inspired by a trip to the Houston rodeo when she missed a flight. The chain fringe and chain strap complimented her bead work so well!
A tour de force by one of the top bead embroidery artists!
