Wire work never ceases to be popular. People love to manipulate the wire into wonderful designs. Often used as a cold connection technique, the wire allows users to connect wire with all kinds of components and to build up intricate designs. If you are as passionate about wire as is this author, then you will love her new book.
Susan Barzacchini is an instructor and designer based in Illinois. Kalmbach Publishing just sent me her latest book for review called Inventive Wire Weaving. The most spectacular of the 20 designs in the book have got to be the pendants. But the author also shares earrings, rings and bracelets.
Shown here are my favorites.
The projects do range in complexity although the book does not display them in a progressive order. What stood out about this book is the range of techniques used. Not just wire work but stamping, metal forming and using a torch for beading wire ends, annealing and soldering.
The designs were done mostly with silver, with some in copper, so the gemstones and other components were often the source of color.
Also noteworthy were the tools and basic techniques sections. This is where one learns about unfamiliar tools and techniques. Did you know there is such a thing as a pearl vise? This is to help hold pearls while enlarging their often inadequate holes (not for other materials). This designer also uses a metal necklace mandrel which makes shaping her necklace cuff design (seen in the video look of her book) easier.
This not just an instructional book but also a wonderfully inspirational one. Highly recommended for those who wish to take their wire work to a different and higher plan!
