gorgeous wire wrapped fan pendant tutorial uses basket weaving technique

British wire designer, Rachel of Wire Guild, came up with a really novel way of making her gorgeous wire wrapped fan pendant with gemstones.  So very different from anything else I have seen.

She first created the basket spokes with many L-shaped wire lengths using 20 G wire. She sets these on masking tape which is then wrapped around a round mandrel.  She then weaves with 26 G.

How she deals with wire ends is another revelation! She curves the wires side by side. At stage of the process, I agree with her observation that the pendant reminds one of a Native American thunderbird!

I liked her tip on how to score a bundle of wire before trimming off each length. Rachel gives some design options at the back. Her suggestion of using two lengths of leather cord with knots on the inside of the pendant is marvelous.
