Kumihimo enthusiasts overwhelmingly use the round disc.  The square plate though, makes for flat designs.  See my past tutorial on a square plate kumihimo bracelet with a button clasp.

I did not use any beads for that tutorial. However this easy flat kumihimo bracelet tutorial by Julie Bean from Beadaholique, does use beads.  The beads are braided so they lie centrally down both sides of the bracelet. You can add beads all the way along or just as a focal.

The tutorial also shows how E6000 is used to seal the cord ends before snipping off the excess.  Ribbon clamps are then placed.

This is the sort of project that you could easily take along on your vacation!

Beadaholique also sells kits for those who prefer convenience.

Check out the Prumihimo disk and instructional book by Pru McCrae if you wish to have beads along the sides of the braids.
